Sir,

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 21st. January, 1918.

I have the honour to acknowledge the

47017... receipt of your Despatch No. 227 of the 10th. of October,

1917, on the subject of the sale of the trade marks register- -ed in the joint names of Messrs. W. &. C. Dunlop and Messrs.

Meyərink & Co.

2.

Your Despatch contains no reference to

the sale of the goodwill, which is necessarily involved in

the sale of the trade marks, of the business of Nessra.—

Meyerink & Co. in whole or in part.

3.

I would suggest therefore that the good- -will of the piece goods department of Messrs. Meyerink & Co. might be sold to Messrs. W. & C. Dunlop together with the interest of the former Firm in the trade marks, and that the assignment should be expressed to be only of the rights and goodwill within Hongkong and that it should restrain the purchaser from using either the name of Meyerink & Co. or its Chinese equivalent. I shall be glad to learn whether you approve these suggestions.

I would, however, point to the great difficulty of forming an estimate of the consideration to be asked, or of judging of the adequacy of any offer which Masers. T. & C. Dunlop might make.

The

E RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P..
